From reaction to strategic action in the face of climate crises
Towards resilient education systems in Latin America and the Caribbean
Latin America and the Caribbean is experiencing a sustained increase in the frequency and intensity of hurricanes, floods, droughts, wildfires and heatwaves. These extreme climate events not only affect the daily lives of communities, but also jeopardize the full realization of the right to education. In this scenario, education systems can play an active role in reducing the impacts of these events and in building resilience.
Against this backdrop, the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) promotes an educational planning approach to the management of climate-related crises and emergencies, aimed at strengthening the capacity of education systems to anticipate risks, reduce vulnerabilities and ensure educational continuity. To this end, it proposes integrating climate change adaptation throughout the planning cycle, as well as carrying out an appropriate education risk analysis.
The event brings together education policy-makers, researchers, risk management specialists and other education stakeholders to discuss how to move towards more resilient education systems. Guided by key questions — which climate emergencies currently threaten the right to education, how they affect school functioning and which institutional capacities need to be strengthened — it seeks to generate evidence, foster dialogue and strengthen cooperation to protect the right to education in an increasingly uncertain climate future.
